DePuy Spine, Inc., Acquires Minimally Invasive Spinal Portfolio
Assets From The Bright Group, Inc.
INSITE™ System and Related Technology to be Commercialized by DePuy
Spine, Inc., for Minimally Invasive Discectomy and Spinal Fusion
Raynham, MA (January 9, 2004) -- DePuy Spine, Inc.,
a Johnson & Johnson company, reported today it has acquired certain
assets of The Bright Group, Inc., a privately held medical device company.
DePuy Spine, Inc., plans to rapidly commercialize products for minimally
invasive discectomy, lumbar spinal fusion, and cervical spinal fusion
based upon platform technology obtained through this transaction. Terms
of the transaction were not disclosed.
Bright's principal product, the INSITE™ System, is designed to provide
less invasive access to the spinal disc, compared to medical techniques
employed in traditional procedures. The INSITE™ product represents
an advance for patients requiring discectomy and related procedures because
its use can reduce the overall incision size and the impact of these surgeries
on patients. It also enables minimally invasive spinal fixation.
"This strategic acquisition is a key component in DePuy Spine's commitment
to establish a comprehensive minimally invasive spinal product portfolio,"
said Earl Fender, Worldwide President of DePuy Spine, Inc. "The technology
will be used as a platform to develop innovative devices that will help
to improve patient outcomes."
Robert Simonson, President of The Bright Group, Inc. said, "We are
pleased DePuy Spine has recognized our efforts and success in the field
of minimally invasive spine surgery."
The Bright Group, Inc., based in Boca Raton, Florida, is a research and
development organization focused on developing technology for minimally
invasive spinal surgery.
