DEPUY SPINE ADDS NEW SCREW AND ROD SYSTEM TO EXPEDIUM™ PRODUCT LINE

RAYNHAM, MA, January 25, 2007 - DePuy Spine, Inc., a Johnson & Johnson company, today announced the launch of the EXPEDIUM 6.35, a titanium and stainless steel screw and rod system designed to simplify the correction of spinal deformities and treatment for degenerative disc disease.

EXPEDIUM 6.35, the latest enhancement to the EXPEDIUM Spine System, offers specific solutions to the challenges of adult patients with degenerative disc disease, as well as adolescent and adult patients suffering from spinal disorders involving large, stiff curves. The System consists of several types of screws including: Monoaxial Screws (4.35 - 8 mm), Polyaxial Screws (4.35 - 9 mm), large diameter Polyaxial Screws (10 - 11 mm) and Uniplanar Screws (4.35 - 7 mm). It also includes open and closed hooks, multiple rod-to-rod connection options and lateral connectors.

"EXPEDIUM 6.35 provides ease of application, efficiency in de-rotation, more space for bone grafting, tremendous segmental control and overall improvements in construct prominence," said Alexis Shelokov, MD, of the Medical Center of Plano.

The System's screws are designed with a double-lead thread pattern allowing surgeons to advance the screws twice as fast as standard screws. A unique single-set screw closure mechanism minimizes the chances of cross-threading and significantly reduces head spreading. The TOP-NOTCH™ feature makes it easier for surgeons to attach instruments to the screw and improves visualization during surgery.

EXPEDIUM 6.35 includes comprehensive screw options, open and closed hook patterns, multiple rod-to-rod connection options and lateral connectors. The system also offers new spinal deformity instruments and implants that can aide in vertebral body de-rotation. The proprietary Uniplanar Screws allow for freedom of placement of a Polyaxial Screw while providing the correction capability of a Monoaxial Screw. Used together with the de-rotation instruments, EXPEDIUM 6.35 offers unique spinal deformity capabilities. The design innovations also include improvements in the basics of any spine system: rod reduction and screw insertion.

During posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) and transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF), surgeons can utilize a unique independent locking technology. This technology allows surgeons to lock the heads of the Polyaxial Screws in any position without locking the entire construct.

These Polyaxial Screws are compatible with both the Single Innie and the Dual Innie closure mechanism allowing the choice to be made intra-operatively rather than pre-operatively. The benefit to the surgeon is the ability to maintain proper sagittal alignment during compression and distraction maneuvers in both kyphotic and lordotic curves of the spine.
